Liam Gillick

British artist Liam Gillick has an interdisciplinary output and his practice encompasses sculpture, installation, graphic design, curating and art criticism. The overarching narrative to his work is the production of (social) relationships through our environment. His early work explored the space between sculpture and functional design and include his 1992 Pinboard project - which comprised of a bulletin board containing instructions for use and suggested items for inclusion on it. Since the mid-1990s, he has become known for his three-dimensional design work. Incorporating screens and suspended platforms made of aluminium and coloured perspex, that appear functional but have no practical use at all. Ironically Gillick has been invited to participate in practical, functional projects, such as a traffic system in Stuttgart for Porsche and to design an intercom system for a housing project in Brussels. There appears to be no defining difference for Gillick to work on white cube exhibitions or commercial projects. The middle ground of compromise is what interests him most.
